What Moving Actually Costs in Brooklyn in 2026

By Brooklyn Best Movers · July 29, 2026

Ask five people what a Brooklyn move costs and you’ll get five different numbers, mostly because they’re each describing a different kind of move. A two-person crew moving a studio out of a walk-up is not the same job as a family of four leaving a three-bedroom in Park Slope, and the pricing shouldn’t pretend otherwise. Here’s what Brooklyn Best Movers actually charges, broken down the way we quote it.

Hourly Rates by Crew Size

Most local moves in Brooklyn — anything within the borough or a short hop into Queens or Manhattan — are billed hourly. The crew size is set by what’s actually in the home, not guessed over the phone.

Crew Size Hourly Rate Typical Job
2 movers $145/hr Studio or small 1BR, minimal furniture
3 movers $190/hr 1-2BR apartment, standard furniture load
4 movers $235/hr 2-3BR, walk-up floors, heavier items
Each additional mover +$50/hr Large homes, tight timelines

The clock starts when the crew arrives and stops when the truck is unloaded at the new address — nothing hidden in between.

When a Flat Rate Makes More Sense

For anything three bedrooms and up, hourly billing gets unpredictable fast, so we quote those jobs as a flat rate instead. The range depends on the walk-up floor count, the total load, and whether packing is included.

Home Size Flat Rate Range
Studio $525 – $725
1 Bedroom $725 – $1,050
2 Bedroom $1,050 – $1,575
3+ Bedroom $1,575 – $2,300

The $175 Deposit

Booking a date requires a $175 deposit, which comes off your final balance rather than sitting on top of the quote as an extra fee. It’s what actually holds your crew and truck for that day, instead of leaving you as a maybe on a dispatch board that gets bumped the moment a bigger job calls in.

Pianos, Gun Safes, and Other Specialty Items

Some items don’t fit into a standard hourly quote because they need extra hands, a piano board, or real rigging straps instead of muscle down a stoop.

  • Piano moving: flat $295, upright or grand
  • Gun safe moving: $250 – $385 depending on weight and stairs involved

Storage, If You Need a Gap

Closing dates and move-in dates don’t always line up. When they don’t, short-term storage in our own Sunset Park warehouse is billed flat, not prorated in a way that punishes you for an odd number of days.

Unit Size Monthly Rate
Studio / 1BR $125/mo
2-3BR $185/mo
4BR+ $260/mo

Why the Number You’re Quoted Is the Number That Holds

A lot of what inflates a “final” bill in Brooklyn has nothing to do with the boxes themselves — it’s the certificate of insurance a building’s management office wanted and nobody requested in advance, or the freight elevator that never got reserved, so the crew sits idle on the clock while someone tracks down the super. Brooklyn Best Movers has been licensed with the NYC DCWP since 2014, and owner Anthony Ruggiero built the company around getting that building paperwork handled at booking, before it turns into a moving-day surprise billed by the hour.
